Autumn term 1 - What a load of rubbish topic
The class 2 school trip, this term for our topic 'what a load of rubbish' was at the Baltic to see the Ifeoma U.Anyaeji exhibition. This artist uses traditional craft processes to create sculptures from discarded bottles and non-biodegradable plastic bags. The children were drawing from observation discussing colour, texture and shape. Paul Merrick, a artist from The Baltic, encouraged the children to describe how they visually interpreted the art. We then moved into the studio where the children built their own structures using a range of materials and techniques such as weaving to design their sculpture in the style of Ifeoma U.Anyaeji’s work. Mrs Tillotson, an interior designer came into school to show the children materials which had been created from plastic found in the ocean. Finally, the children created some amazing pieces for their topic homework, including jewellery made from milk bottle tops.
Autumn term 2- Celebrations topic
Interfaith week/Creative Curriculum
What a wonderful week Class 2 had celebrating inter-faith week. We had lots of lovely visitors in school and the chance to do lots of different activities relating to religion, linking to our whole school topic of celebrations. Revered Helen opened our Inter faith week talking about symbols of Christianity and we used this as a starting point for a comparison to different religions then Phil Andre an RE specialist discussed branches of Christianity with the children. JLJ studios came into school to teach Bollywood dancing. Tiny tasters taught the children how to make Jewish Boureka. The Islamic diversity discussed with the children, their religion and some of their celebrations, festivals and way of life. Finally we visited the Hindu Temple and the Sikh Gurdwara up Westgate Road in Newcastle. The children had a chance to look around the buildings and explore how each faith is practiced.
Spring term 1 - Fantastically great women who changed the world
Rosa Parks, Coco Chanel, Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, Marie Curie and Mary Seacole are a few of the many women that have changed our world. Class 2 were inspired by these women’s lives, creative minds and selfless actions to make a change in the world. We are a super creative class who love to express ourselves through Art and Design. During our topic 'Fantastically great women who changed the world' We studied the life of Frida Kahlo. The children created their very own self-portraits of their imagination using a range of line and colour work. Inspired by the work of Coco-Chanel, Class 2 designed their very own hat collection. We researched her work, then followed a design brief to carry this out.During Black History month, we learnt about Rosa Parks and what she did to stand up to racism. We also researched the life of Mary Seacole and her travels in order to help soldiers during the war.
